New Years Resolutions - My Plans as an artist for 2017

January 1, 2017

Hello Everyone

If you're anything like me, then you wanted for months for 2016 to be over. It was a disaster of a year, not only for the planet but I suffered at the seemingly merciless hands of 2016 too with one misfortune to the next.

However, no point dwelling on the past because it's solely now history. Mistakes have been made and any damage done is done. Don't dwell on it (little life lesson from me). But, as I continue this here weird Arts journey (HATE that phrase but it's the best I could do) I chose at the beginning of '16 to set Resolution/ Targets for myself to try and achieve.

Obviously not crazy targets which where to far fetch but ones which where attainable.

So, without further ado, here are my Resolutions/ Targets for 2017

1 : PAINT MORE : I know that does sound very vague but let me elaborate. Over the past few weeks, I have been looking at all the content I have on my website and on my Instagram & Tumblr, and I feel that I have a very slim painting portfolio. It's much slimmer than I would have hoped for by now. I want to expand my Painting portfolio in a number of ways. I want to just paint more. Whether it is a commission, a painting to just have on file or a painted illustration, I want to increase my skill set and feel more confident in working with paints. I'd quite like to dabble slightly in landscape painting. I feel it would be a nice change from painting only faces and it could be my unknown calling 😂.

2 : REVIEW SOCIAL MEDIA EXISTANCE : In this tech-savvy world, Social Media is an amazing platform for artists to start showcasing their work and gaining attention. I was encouraged to start my Art Instagram just over a year ago. My art account has been nurtured and watered over the year but I feel that it is not a true representation of how I feel about my work. I keep everything quite secretive by posting only my finished work. I'd rather share as much of the work as I could because I like the idea of giving my viewers an inside into the world of my art. But just give me time to figure out what I want to do as an artist.

3 : START SELLING WORK : I have had commissions over the past year. Some have succeeded, some have fallen flat. But that's ok. Not everything is going to happen and maybe those commissions where asked for at completely the wrong time. However, selling original Abstract paintings and prints of my photography would be a nice start to get a small business up and running. It has been on the cards and in conversation for a while and I'll hopefully get my act together and start selling my work.

4 : EXPLORE STYLE IN ILLUSTRATION : I am still exploring what I want my style to be when it to my illustration. The ultimate goal is to be able to do a drawing and the viewer immediately go "oh yes, thats definitely her style, no doubt about it." Im inspired, like any artist, by such a variety of different forms of art and so many different artists I feel trapped under the weight of it all. I'd like to break away from the cookie-cutter mould of what I might be drawing. After some constructive criticism which, for me, is always appreciated, I had a bit of a wake up call and will spend some time trying to sort that out.

5 : PRACTICE DIGITAL ART : Keeping with Illustration, I am lucky enough to have some very expensive digital drawing equipment. Now I've got the kit, Im planning to utilise it and create work with.

And with that, its time to end. I hope you've all had a really safe start to the New Year and speak soon.

Yes, exactly that. I am currently on an artists residency. Which is something I never thought would happen, or perhaps not directly out of Uni.
